As the NFL Combine comes to a close it s time to go over the NFL Network s nearly 30 hours of live coverage. As usual there were risers, fallers and sleepers who made an impression on the talent evaluators from every NFL team. Let’s continue the review with the running back and tight end positions.
No position has been as devalued as much as the running back position in the NFL. First round picks used on running backs are becoming increasingly rare. In the 2012 NFL Draft the Cleveland Browns picked Trent Richardson with the fifth overall pick it might take the second coming of Adrian “Purple Jesus” Peterson before we see another running back selected in the top ten of the NFL Draft.
That being said there were some impressive results turned in by some running backs at the combine. Perhaps the most impressive workout was turned in by Dri Archer from Kent St. University. Archer is far from a franchise running back but he gave Titans running back Chris Johnson a run for his Combine record in the 40-yard dash. Johnson’s record of 4.24 was nearly bettered by Archer who posted a 4.26. At the next level Archer projects as a Dexter McCluster type player but faster.
The running back position is so devalued that we might not see the first one come off the board until the third round. Some of the guys I really like are Bishop Sankey, Charles Sims, Storm Johnson and Henry Josey.
There could be three tight ends selected in the first round of the upcoming NFL Draft. Eric Ebron, Jace Amaro and Austin Serefian-Jenkins are three top tight ends in this draft class. Only Ebron had a successful Combine and he has solidified himself as a potential top ten pick.
Amaro ran a slow 4.74 time in the 40-yard dash and wasn’t impressive in drills dropping several passes. His production at Texas Tech can’t be overlooked due to one bad day in gym shorts but he will need a strong showing at his pro day to solidify his first round potential.
Jenkins wasn’t allowed to participate in any of the drills at all due to his troublesome left ankle. This injury has plagued him for nearly two years and is a major red flag for teams. If he doesn’t display all of his skills on his pro day it will likely push him out of the first round and maybe out of the second as well.
A.C. Leonard hanging scales from Tennessee St. put on a show with his 4.5 time in the 40-yard dash and his skills during drills. Leonard was originally a Florida Gator but off the field problems after his freshman season forced him to transfer to Tenn. St. Some team that can take the time to develop him will roll the dice on this raw product.
NFL free agency begins with a bang.
