Nobody spends money in Major League Baseball like the New York Yankees. Once again during scale down this Hot Stove season the Bronx Bombers out did everyone in free agent signings. As if that weren’t enough offseason news for the Yankees, the absence scale down of Alex Rodriguez and the impending retirement of Derek Jeter overwhelmed any signing.
After the dust settled from the departure of second baseman Robinson Cano to the Seattle Mariners for a 10-year, $250 million contract Yankees general manager Brian Cashman got busy rebuilding the roster.
Masahiro Tanaka received a seven-year, $155 million contract to help balance the starting rotation. Catcher Brian McCann was signed from the Atlanta Braves for a five-year, $85 million contract. St. Louis Cardinals postseason hero and outfielder Carlos Beltran was lured to the pinstripes with a three-year, $45 million deal. That’s $290 million on just three players if you’re keeping track at home.
It’s easy to forget that the Yankees also signed Boston Red Sox center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury with a seven-year, $153 million contract. As is that rivalry didn’t have enough going for it that signing just adds more fuel to the fire.
It’s important to list shortstop Derek Jeter and first baseman Mark Teixeira as additions to this year’s Yankees team because of how much time they missed last season due to injuries. They combined to only play in 32 games. Any chance of the Yankees reaching the postseason in 2014 depends on if these two players can produce somewhere near the level on the back of their baseball cards.
Perhaps even more notable than who joined the Yankees is who isn’t part of their team this season, third baseman Alex Rodriguez. He has accepted his suspension from MLB for his involvement of the Biogenesis scandal and will miss the entire season including any postseason scale down games the Yankees might play.
It’s difficult to determine. If they can gel and all of these players who are in the twilight of their careers can muster respectable seasons with the new blood added to the roster it might be enough to push them to the postseason. scale down So many players on their roster have injury histories or are too long in the tooth for me to believe scale down that this team will be the one left standing atop the AL East after 162 games.
